Being a homestay host requires patience, understanding and a commitment to ensure the students feel comfortable. Listed below are conditions that the host family must agree in order to host a student.
1. The homestay family agrees to provide breakfast and dinner every day. Dinner must be a well balanced meal, generally consisting of meat, vegetables, potatoes, or rice fruit and milk or juice. Fast food dinners such as pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs etc are acceptable on an occasional only. Dinner must be a sit down meal. If students select the three meal plan, a packed lunch consisting of a sandwich, fruit and a cold drink must be prepared by the family. Snacks should be available to the student.
2. The family hereby agrees to provide the student with a clean and tidy room. Basic furniture that includes a bed, closet, desk, chair and good lighting are to be provided by the family. Bed sheets are to be changed weekly. The homestay family also agrees that they will not put more then one student per room and not have any other students of the same nationality or different gender residing in the same household. The homestay family is forbidden to accept favours such as baby sitting, cleaning the house, mowing the lawn etc. The room cannot be located in the basement.
3. The homestay family hereby agrees to treat the student with respect and tolerance and consistently provide all aspects of hospitality to the student. If improper physical advances towards a student occurs, the student will be removed from the home and legal action taken if warranted.
4. The family must speak English when the student is present and provide each student with a key to the house.
5. On or before the first day of courses, the homestay family is required to show the student how to get to the school by TTC.
6. The family is required to show the student some local places of interest and include the student in the family's activities for the duration of the student's stay.
7. The homestay family will do their student's laundry or make laundry facilities available to their student.
8. The homestay placement does not assume any responsibilities for any injuries suffered by the student while in the family's care.
9. The homestay office cannot guarantee that the host applicant will be provided with a student.
10. It is the responsibility of the homestay family to inform the student about how things work and where things are in the kitchen, bedroom, laundry and other areas in the home. It is a good idea to explain the dynamics of the household in order to avoid problems.
11. Be tolerant of the students foreigns customs and habits.
12. If the student wants to discontinue homestay for whatever reason, they may find other lodgings by providing two weeks notice to the homestay family.
13. The Homestay Student accompanying the Homestay family on holiday or a day trip is expected to pay for travel and personal expenses and the host family to pay for accommodations and food. Student not accompanying the family on holidays, a temporary homestay arrangement must be made and approved by our office.
